Persistent flooding caused by heavy rainfall has disrupted commercial activities and transportation in Ikotun, Lagos, leaving residents, traders and commuters stranded while businesses record significant losses.
The flooding affected several areas, including Ikotun Bus Stop, Ikotun Roundabout, Idimu Road and parts of Ikotun Market, where roads became waterlogged, making movement difficult for motorists and pedestrians.
Business activities at Ikotun Market were severely affected as many traders reported a decline in customer patronage due to inaccessible roads.
Mrs. Grace Ngagwa, a trader at Ikotun Market, said the recurring flooding has made it difficult for her to operate her business.
“Since the flooding started, I have not been able to return to the market regularly. Many customers avoid coming here whenever it rains because the roads become flooded. My sales have dropped, and it has been difficult for me.” Mrs. Grace Ngagwa, Trader at Ikotun Market
Transportation services were also disrupted as motorists struggled to navigate flooded roads, resulting in heavy traffic and long delays.
“Whenever it rains, movement becomes very difficult. Vehicles get stuck in flooded areas, and some roads become almost impossible to pass. The water can damage parts of our vehicles, and we spend long hours in traffic instead of working. Mr. Lucky Eluwa, a commercial bus driver, said the situation has reduced drivers' daily earnings while increasing the risk of damage to their vehicles.
Commuters also lamented the impact of the flooding on their daily routines.
“Getting to work whenever it rains is very frustrating. Because of the flooding and traffic, many drivers increase their fares, and we end up spending more money than we planned. Sometimes I have to adjust my budget just to get to work on time.” Miss Esther Johnson, Commuter
Miss Esther Johnson, who was travelling to work through Ikotun Bus Stop, said transportation costs usually increase whenever heavy rainfall occurs.
Residents blamed the recurring flooding on blocked drainage channels and inadequate drainage infrastructure, urging the Lagos State Government and other relevant authorities to improve drainage systems and ensure regular maintenance of existing channels.
They warned that unless urgent measures are taken, continued flooding during the rainy season could further disrupt economic activities, damage property and worsen the hardship faced by residents.
